Ripudaman Magon: A Pioneer in Bilingual Banking Software in India
Despite not having a programming background, Ripudaman Magon’s conviction and vision led to the creation of the world’s first truly bilingual banking software. His innovation aimed to revolutionize accessibility and inclusivity in Indian banking by enabling seamless operations in both Hindi and English.
Early Life, Education, and Entrepreneurial Vision
From Commerce Graduate to Technology Innovator
Born in Kota and raised in Jaipur, Ripudaman Magon completed his B.Com (Honours) from Rajasthan University and later earned an MBA from BIT Mesra, Ranchi. Without any formal training in computer programming, he took on the ambitious challenge of developing India’s first bilingual banking software.
Driven by determination and belief in inclusive technology, he bridged the gap between policy vision and technological execution, proving that innovation is powered by purpose, not just technical degrees.
The Genesis of India’s First Bilingual Banking Software
The Defining Moment in 1996
The idea was born during a 1996 trip from Jaipur to Delhi. During a discussion about the government’s push for Hindi in banking operations—despite the absence of bilingual banking systems—Ripudaman made a bold commitment to build one.
With support from his father and technical collaboration with Logitronics India Ltd., along with marketing backing from Unicorp Industries (UPL Pvt. Ltd.), the foundation of a historic innovation was laid.
Building a Revolutionary Banking Solution
-
Conducted extensive ground research across public sector banks
-
Drafted the Software Requirement Study (SRS) personally
-
Chose Power Builder 5 during India’s transition from DOS to Windows
-
Built the software from Jaipur, outside India’s mainstream tech hubs
What emerged was not merely software, but a culturally transformative banking solution that enabled operations in regional languages long before “Digital India” became a national movement.
The Birth of BancMate: India’s First Bilingual Banking Software
Government Policy and Official Mandate
In 1987, the Ministry of Home Affairs mandated bilingual computer systems for government departments and public sector banks. The system was required to:
-
Allow data entry in both Hindi and English
-
Enable user interface operation in either language
-
Generate reports and outputs in Hindi or English
What Is Bilingual Banking Software?
Bilingual banking software is a fully integrated dual-language digital banking system. It is not a translation tool, but a comprehensive operational framework that allows bank employees and customers to use banking systems in their preferred language.
BancMate: A Historic Innovation
BancMate was developed under Natural Technologies Pvt. Ltd. (NTPL) with technical partnership from Logitronics India Ltd. It fulfilled all constitutional and Official Languages Act requirements for bilingual banking operations.
Launch of BancMate: A Milestone in Indian Banking Technology
Historic Presentation at IBA (1998)
In January 1998, BancMate was officially presented at an Indian Banks’ Association (IBA) event in Delhi. The software demonstrated live banking operations in both Hindi and English.
The IBA subcommittee, including members from major banks and the RBI, unanimously recognized BancMate as the only product meeting all mandated requirements.
Institutional Setback
Despite endorsement, IBA declined to promote or fund national implementation, leaving adoption to individual banks. Although momentum slowed, BancMate remained the world’s first successfully built bilingual banking software.
Legal Recognition and Judicial Support
In 2005, the Rajasthan High Court directed public sector banks to implement bilingual software following a public interest litigation. Although the Supreme Court later allowed voluntary adoption where feasible, the legal proceedings validated the importance of linguistic inclusivity in banking.
Rise, Challenges, and Reinvention
Expansion Across India
NTPL continued pursuing banks independently and achieved major milestones:
-
Implementation in over 5,000 bank branches
-
Deployment across six public sector banks
-
Adoption by 30 Regional Rural Banks (RRBs)
-
Recognition by NASSCOM as one of India’s Top 100 Innovators
Partnership with Microsoft
Microsoft recognized BancMate’s potential and invited NTPL to present at BankTech ’98, significantly boosting its credibility and industry visibility.
Merger with HCL Infosystems
In 2008, NTPL’s software division merged with HCL Infosystems. However, HCL shut operations in 2012, leading to another major setback.
Revival and New Direction (2014 Onwards)
Undeterred, Ripudaman Magon revived the company in 2014, focusing on software-integrated functional products and smart interconnected systems built on robust software architecture.
Vision Reignited: The 2025 Collaboration
Partnership with Patanjali Group
In 2025, Naturals joined hands with the Patanjali Group, reigniting the mission of bilingual technology in India. This partnership represents:
-
Promotion of local language empowerment
-
Revival of India-first software development
-
Strengthening linguistic identity in digital transformation
Bilingualism Is the Future of Indian Technology
This renewed movement challenges global tech systems to embrace multilingual inclusivity. The mission is clear:
India speaks in more than one language — and so should its technology.
Bilingualism is not just a feature; it is the future of inclusive digital governance.
